How to Buy Art Online

We’re all getting used to shopping online, but choosing original art for your home can feel a bit overwhelming when you don’t know how to buy art online. These 5 tips will help you to confidently enjoy finding artwork that you will love for years to come.

1. What is Your Style?

Think about the style of your home, the colours you enjoy and what type of art instinctively appeals to you. You could set up a Pinterest board to collect your ideas.

2. Measure Your Walls

Measure the space you have available on your wall. If you find it hard to visualise, make a paper template to see how your chosen painting might look. Don’t forget to allow for the frame, and some breathing space around the painting.

3. Your Art Buying Budget

Consider your how much you want to spend – original art is available across a wide range of prices so don’t overstretch yourself. If you’re new to buying art maybe buy a small artwork from your favourite artist – you can always buy a bigger painting later! Alternatively, if the painting you love is out of your price range, ask about an instalment plan, or see if prints are available.

4. Ask Questions About Buying Art Online

Original artwork is a one-off purchase for your home, and you need to comfortable with your decision. Check terms and conditions on the website, including information on secure payment methods and safe packaging and shipping. Is there a refund policy? In the UK you should be able to buy art online and return it in its original condition within 14 days for a full refund if you change your mind for any reason.

If you have any questions check the website or ask the artist or online gallery.

5. Is it a Genuine Painting?

An original painting should be signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity so that you know that it is genuine.

If you’re buying direct from the artist, this might seem unnecessary, but you wouldn’t buy a Picasso without checking it isn’t a fake. Who knows, you may want to sell your painting later – if your chosen artist‘s work becomes more valuable, you’d want to prove that you own a genuine painting!
